Tattooed Women:

This series of oil paintings on canvas alludes to historical painting styles and themes as a means of prompting various contextual associations. I began by referencing portrait painting - specifically the genre paintings of Frans Hals - gradually merging this with allusions to other historic painting, figure painting, and up to the precursors of early modernism. There are three types of works in this series: portraits, historical paintings (which allude to or parody conventions of historical painting), and tattoo "details"

The frames on the portraits are an essential part of the works. The frames have on them light pencil line drawings suggesting various antique frame styles. The drawings were derived from frames on works in the Albright Knox Art gallery collection. A detail is included below.
